During an appearance on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Tom Brady revealed that the New England Patriots’ tendency to start Super Bowls conservatively was not intentional. In fact, Brady admitted that most of the time they did not execute the plan exactly as they wanted to. The Patriots appeared in nine Super Bowls during the Brady-Belichick era and failed to score in the first quarter in eight of those appearances.
Brady attributed the slow starts to nerves, the unique nature of Super Bowl Sunday, and the emotional energy expended throughout the day. Despite the slow starts, the Patriots still managed to win six out of nine Super Bowl appearances under Brady and Belichick.
In contrast, Brady was able to get off to a quick start in Super Bowl LV with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, throwing the only first-quarter Super Bowl touchdown of his career. Tampa Bay went on to win the game 31-9 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the slow starts with the Patriots, Brady and his team still achieved great success in the Super Bowl.
