A Sanctuary Cafe, Boston’s first cat cafe located in Beacon Hill, has successfully opened its doors to visitors looking for a unique experience. The cafe offers a cozy environment where guests can enjoy coffee, pastries, and books while interacting with the 16 resident cats.
Owner Brittany Baker spent over two years navigating through red tape and permits to open the cafe, which also has a bookstore and cat lounge. Despite the challenges, Baker’s vision for a community-driven space has been well-received by the public, with overwhelming support and positive feedback.
The cafe’s unique business model includes paying all full-time, non-salaried staff a living wage, as well as being a benefit corporation that supports social causes. With prices for cat lounge reservations higher than other cat cafes, A Sanctuary Cafe hopes to establish a precedent for businesses that prioritize community impact.
Overall, the cafe aims to provide a sanctuary for both humans and cats, offering a space for relaxation, social interaction, and giving back to the community.
