President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order calling for the declassification of documents related to the assassinations of John F Kennedy (JFK), Robert F Kennedy (RFK), and Martin Luther King Jr (MLK). This move, which Trump announced on his fourth day in office, has been long-awaited by researchers, conspiracy theorists, and politicians. The order mandates the release of records within 45 days, shedding light on these historic events.
In a separate development, a federal judge has blocked another executive order by Trump that aimed to end birthright citizenship, declaring it unconstitutional. This order sought to revoke automatic US citizenship for babies born to undocumented migrants and individuals on temporary visas. Legal challenges have been mounted against this policy, citing the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which grants citizenship to those born in the US.
Meanwhile, Trump addressed various global issues during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He discussed tariffs on businesses, oil prices, the war in Ukraine, NATO spending, China relations, and Canada’s trade deficit with the US. Trump’s speech aimed to reassure business leaders and emphasise his administration’s priorities, including boosting fossil fuels, becoming a manufacturing superpower, and focusing on deregulation.
In addition to these key developments, Trump signed orders supporting federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, regulating cryptocurrency, and pardoning anti-abortion rights activists. Senate confirmation was also secured for John Ratcliffe as director of the CIA, while security protection for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was revoked due to threats from Iran. Trump’s presidency continues to be marked by significant policy decisions and legal challenges.
