Pets take refuge as Franklin Fire rages on in Malibu

As firefighters continue to battle the Franklin Fire off the coast of Malibu, animal shelters are stepping in to care for pets of evacuated residents who have been forced to leave their homes. The Agoura Animal Care Center has taken in dogs, a parrot, and larger animals like horses and livestock have been directed to Pierce College for shelter. The sudden and rapid nature of the fire has caused some pet owners to be unprepared and without a plan for their animals, resulting in them seeking assistance from shelters. Despite challenges like limited space in an already crowded shelter, efforts are being made to accommodate the influx of animals impacted by the fire, including creating makeshift shelter with tarps and crates. The shelter is in need of supplies like food and blankets, while larger animals require items like hay bales.

Firefighters have made progress in containing the over 4,000 acre fire, reaching 20% containment as of Thursday afternoon. Though red flag warnings have lapsed, winds continue to pose challenges for containment efforts. While some residents may be allowed to return home as evacuation orders are expected to be lifted, weather conditions remain dry with potential for problematic winds. Light rain is forecasted for Saturday, providing some relief to the firefighters battling the blaze. Overall, efforts are ongoing to contain the fire, care for animals, and ensure the safety and well-being of the affected residents in the area.
