The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) has responded to the controversy surrounding its schedule commitment policy by updating its handbook with new language outlining the rules around the deadline process. This decision comes after several schools took legal action against the MIAA just over a month ago.
According to the new requirements, schools must submit competition information through the MIAA scheduling system by the seasonal deadlines specified in the MIAA’s Sport Limitations Sheet. Additionally, schools participating in regular-season tournaments that take place before a specified cutoff date must include placeholder games on their schedule.
The MIAA Board of Directors unanimously approved these changes on Wednesday, aiming to provide clarity and transparency in the scheduling process. This move is expected to address concerns raised by schools regarding the previous policy.
By implementing these updates, the MIAA aims to ensure fair and consistent scheduling practices for high school athletic programs across the state.
