Boston 25 News Investigating Two State Police Troopers Linked to Karen Reed Case

Two Massachusetts State Police troopers working with the Norfolk County District Attorney’s office are currently under internal investigation, while a third trooper has been cleared of any wrongdoing. The case in question involves Karen Read, who was charged in the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe in Canton. Read’s first trial ended in a hung jury, with a new trial date scheduled for January 2025.

The troopers being investigated are Detective Lieutenant Brian Tully, Lieutenant John Fanning, and Sergeant Yuri Bukhenik. The allegations against them are not disclosed, but Lieutenant Fanning has been cleared of any violations of rules and regulations. Detective Lieutenant Tully, who testified in the Read trial, reported offensive texts from another trooper to State Police command.

Trooper Proctor, whose texts were reported by Lieutenant Tully, described his messages as unprofessional but said they did not impact the integrity of the investigation. Sergeant Yuri Bukhenik, Proctor’s supervisor, testified that Read told him she was framed.

The investigation into Lieutenant Fanning has been closed due to insufficient evidence, while the cases involving Detective Lieutenant Tully and Sergeant Bukhenik remain ongoing. The Massachusetts State Police declined to provide further details on the investigation, stating that the purpose of internal affairs investigations is to determine compliance with department rules and regulations. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
