Former Olympians and biathletes have come forward to reveal sexual abuse and harassment by coaches and those in power on the U.S. Biathlon team. The women described a culture of abuse dating back to the 1990s, in which complaints were dismissed by officials more concerned with winning medals than holding offenders accountable. The women reported facing retaliation for speaking up and being forced to end their racing careers early.
The allegations involve multiple coaches, including one who was accused of sexually abusing a biathlete, leading her to attempt suicide. The women claim that officials, including Max Cobb, failed to address their claims and instead supported the predators. An independent investigation into the team culture confirmed misogynistic behavior and fear of retaliation among biathletes.
SafeSport has ordered a new investigation into the allegations, and the women hope that by sharing their stories, they can bring an end to the culture of abuse in biathlon. The U.S. Biathlon Association is implementing an action plan in response to the findings, including workshops and measures to ensure a respectful environment for athletes.
