Xaverian relies on strong defense and Vincent Busa to secure second consecutive Div. 1 state championship

Xaverian showcased the importance of a strong defense and a talented running back in their 14-7 victory over Needham in the Division 1 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium. Despite the trend of pass-heavy offenses, the Hawks shut down Needham’s running game and relied on running back Vincent Busa, who rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown. Xaverian’s defense held Needham’s Aidan Williams to just 64 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Will Wood also made a big impact with an 81-yard touchdown pass to Dave Chiavegato early in the game. Needham managed to score a touchdown in the second half, but Xaverian’s defense held strong to secure the win.

Xaverian coach Al Fornaro praised his team’s defensive effort and the toughness of Busa. The victory allowed Xaverian to retain possession of the Agganis Trophy. Despite early setbacks in the season, the Hawks were able to come together and finish strong to claim the state title. The game showcased the power of a well-rounded, hard-nosed team in the face of high-powered offenses.
