Recognition for Chestnut Middle School in Springfield is a ‘dream come true’ on a national level

Springfield’s Chestnut Talented and Gifted Middle School has been recognized as a “national distinguished school” by the U.S. Department of Education. Once labeled as underperforming, the school has made a remarkable transformation under the leadership of Principal Andrea Metzger. The school focuses on academic excellence, pushing students above their grade levels while also addressing their social and emotional needs.

Acting Commissioner Russell Johnston praised the school for its amazing work and the dedication of its educators. Only one other school in Massachusetts will receive this honor, highlighting the exceptional achievement of Chestnut Middle School. Superintendent Sonia Dinnall sees this recognition as a stepping stone for Springfield education, with plans to expand honors and awards in the district.

Students at Chestnut Middle School, like Ian Colloza-Cruz and Josiah Cacique, have thrived in the supportive and inclusive community of the school. They credit the school’s programs, including English as a second language learning opportunities, for their personal growth and success. The school will officially receive the distinguished school honor at the National ESEA Conference in February 2025.
