Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson arrested for federal corruption charges

Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson was arrested on federal public corruption charges for allegedly funneling taxpayer money into her own pocket through a kickback scheme involving a relative on her staff. The indictment accuses Fernandes Anderson of wire fraud and theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. She accepted a $7,000 cash kickback in a bathroom at City Hall, according to investigators. Fernandes Anderson had financial troubles, including missing rent and car payments and bank overdraft fees, at the time of the alleged scheme. She previously faced a $5,000 civil penalty for hiring her sister and son to paid positions on her staff in violation of the conflict of interest law. Fernandes Anderson, who was born in Cape Verde, was elected to the Boston City Council in 2021 and won reelection in 2023. It is unclear if she will retain her position on the Council moving forward. Fernandes Anderson issued a statement to her constituents expressing her commitment to continue fighting for them but did not directly address the allegations. She is set to be arraigned in federal court. The case is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
