She accepted a $7,000 cash kickback in a bathroom at City Hall, according to investigators. She previously faced a $5,000 civil penalty for hiring her sister and son to paid positions on her staff in violation of the conflict of interest law. Fernandes Anderson, who was born in Cape Verde, was elected to the Boston City Council in 2021 and won reelection in 2023. It is unclear if she will retain her position on the Council moving forward. Fernandes Anderson issued a statement to her constituents expressing her commitment to continue fighting for them but did not directly address the allegations.
