President-elect Donald Trump has chosen former Rep. Billy Long of Missouri to lead the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Trump praised Long’s hard work and respect among his colleagues in Congress, as well as his experience as a business owner and tax advisor. Long, who supported Trump’s 2016 presidential bid, used his skills as an auctioneer to drown out a far-right protester during a hearing in 2018. Trump referred to Long as a “consummate ‘people person’” who brings 32 years of experience running businesses.
Long’s previous roles as a business owner and tax advisor have prepared him to navigate the complexities of complying with IRS rules and regulations. If confirmed by the Senate, Long will be responsible for overseeing changes to tax policy proposed by the Trump administration and Congress. Trump’s proposed tax cuts, which aim to benefit middle-class Americans, would also fall under Long’s purview as the head of the IRS.
With his background in business and tax advisory, Long is seen as a well-suited candidate to lead the IRS. Trump expressed confidence that Long’s leadership at the agency would be beneficial for both taxpayers and IRS employees. As a long-time supporter of Trump, Long’s appointment is expected to align with the administration’s tax policies and goals.
