Washington sheriff’s office reports boy’s 160+ mile joyride in stolen car

A 12-year-old boy stole his grandfather’s vehicle and drove around 160 miles over a mountain freeway in Washington before being caught by deputies on the day before Thanksgiving. Police in Issaquah alerted the Grant County Sheriff’s Office that the boy had taken his grandfather’s Volkswagen hatchback and was suspected to be heading to Moses Lake. The boy traveled for around two-and-a-half hours, crossing Snoqualmie Pass at an elevation of 3,000 feet and dealing with near-freezing temperatures and snow on the mountain pass. Deputies found the Volkswagen parked in a residential area near the Larson Air Force Base and began a pursuit with the boy, eventually using a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle. The boy was booked at the Chelan County Juvenile Justice Center on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle and felony eluding. Sheriff’s spokesperson Kyle Foreman stated that they were happy to have stopped the boy before he could harm himself or others. The boy’s journey demonstrated a concerning lack of judgment and dangerous behavior for someone his age.
