On December 1, Rosa Parks stands her ground on bus seat


Today marks the 336th day of the year, with 30 days remaining in 2024. On this day in history, in 1955, Rosa Parks, a Black seamstress, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama city bus, sparking a yearlong boycott and contributing to the civil rights movement.

In 1824, the U.S. House of Representatives decided the presidential election after no candidate won a majority of the electoral vote. Freedom Flights from Cuba to the U.S. began landing in Miami in 1965, bringing over 250,000 Cuban refugees over eight years.

In 1969, the first draft lottery for military service since World War II was held. Ukrainians voted for independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. In 2009, President Obama ordered more troops to Afghanistan.
