Dozens of soldiers killed as Syrian rebels advance into Aleppo, reports army

A major rebel attack led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham swept into the city of Aleppo, causing the Syrian army to redeploy and marking the biggest challenge to President Bashar al-Assad in years. The war in Syria, which has been ongoing since 2011, saw rebels enter large parts of Aleppo, prompting the Syrian army to prepare a counterattack with airstrikes targeting rebel gatherings and convoys in the city. The rebels were also able to take control of Aleppo airport and the city of Maraat al Numan in Idlib province.

The conflict in Syria has gained renewed attention as the wider region is embroiled in wars in Gaza and Lebanon. The offensive in Aleppo highlighted the complicated geopolitics of the conflict, with Assad backed by Russia and Iran, while Turkey supports some of the rebels in the northwest. Russian and Turkish officials expressed concerns about the situation and discussed coordinating actions to stabilize the country.

The fighting in Aleppo has led to civilian casualties and prompted Syria to receive promises of additional military aid from Russia. The advance of the rebels was aided by a lack of Iran-backed manpower to support the government in Aleppo province. The opposition fighters cited Russian and Syrian air force strikes on civilians in Idlib province as the reason for their campaign. The conflict in Syria continues to evolve, with various factions vying for control and stability in the region.
