In a heated game between the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins, Nikita Zadorov and Evgeni Malkin both received fines of $5,000 for their actions at the end of the first period. Zadorov jabbed Malkin with his stick from the Bruins’ bench, earning an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. In retaliation, Malkin swung his stick back at the Bruins’ bench and was called for slashing. The incident could have resulted in a more severe penalty for Boston if it had affected the play. Malkin sarcastically brushed off questions about any personal history between the two players.
The NHL Department of Player Safety announced the fines, with the money going to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. Both players will have to write a check for their actions during the game. The tension on the ice between the Bruins and Penguins added an extra layer of excitement to the game, but both players will have to pay the price for their actions.
