Notes from the Garden: November 27, 2024

The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and National Garden Clubs, Inc., is hosting the 2025 Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster contest for students in first through fifth grade. The contest aims to promote wildfire prevention and environmental conservation through original drawings featuring Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl. Individual children, as well as groups, clubs, and schools, are encouraged to participate and emphasize the importance of personal responsibility in preventing wildfires and conserving natural resources.

Posters must be completed by individual students, contain correct spelling, and prominently feature either Smokey Bear’s wildfire prevention message or Woodsy Owl’s conservation messages. Rules for the contest, including size requirements and allowed materials, can be found on the GCFM website. Contest entrants must be sponsored by a GCFM-recognized local garden club, with submissions due by January 10, 2025. For more information or to connect with a recognized garden club, contact Mary Bandouveres at gcfmyouthcontests@gmail.com.
