Things to know about the upcoming execution of Carey Dale Grayson with nitrogen gas

Alabama death row inmate Carey Dale Grayson is set to be executed via nitrogen gas, a controversial method that some argue is torture. If the execution moves forward, Grayson will be only the third inmate in the U.S. to be executed by this method and the 22nd inmate overall this year. Grayson was convicted of the torture, bludgeoning, and mutilation of Vickie Lynn Deblieux in 1994. He was one of four teenagers involved in the murder. They picked up Deblieux while she was hitchhiking, then proceeded to beat, stomp, and kick her before finally killing her by standing on her throat. Grayson and the other teens later mutilated her corpse by cutting it multiple times.

Grayson’s execution is set to take place at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama. The nitrogen hypoxia method has been used in the state before and has been criticized for not guaranteeing a painless death. Grayson has filed multiple appeals but has lost, with his last chance at a reprieve resting with the U.S. Supreme Court and Governor Kay Ivey. Grayson has a history of bipolar disorder and his mother died when he was young, leading to mental health issues.

The use of nitrogen gas for executions has drawn widespread criticism and concern over its potential for causing pain and suffering. Both supporters and opponents of the method are closely watching Grayson’s case, as it could set a precedent for future executions in Alabama and potentially across the country.
