Last summer, a team of Canadian scientists on Qikiqtaruk, an island off the north coast of the Yukon, witnessed dramatic changes as the western Arctic experienced record-breaking heat. Landslides and thaw slumps ravaged the island, with more than 700 collapses occurring over a two-week period. The researchers, led by ecology professor Isla Myers-Smith, found that the tundra was rapidly shearing off, leading to irreversible changes to the landscape.
The team, known as “Team Shrub,” has been studying the island for over a decade and has seen a rapid reshaping of the ecosystem with little precedent. As temperatures rise and the growing season lengthens, shrubs like willow are pushing north and overshadowing the mosses and lichens that have grown over hundreds of years. While this greening of the Arctic may seem positive, it is causing disruptions to the natural rhythms of the animals that call the tundra home, such as caribou and the golden plover.
The island, once a hunting and fishing ground for the Inuvialuit people, is now pockmarked with thaw slumps and active layer detachment, signs of the fragile permafrost that underlies the landscape. This phenomenon is not only disrupting ecosystems but also releasing vast amounts of stored carbon into the atmosphere. With climate change threatening the delicate balance of the Arctic, the research conducted by Team Shrub is crucial in understanding the impacts of these changes.
However, the challenges of studying the island are increasing, with unpredictable weather and frequent landslides making it difficult for researchers to collect data. Despite these challenges, the team remains committed to uncovering the mysteries of Qikiqtaruk and shedding light on the immense changes taking place in the region.
