Governor Maura Healey faces political setbacks on Election Day

Gov. Maura Healey faced disappointing results on Election Day despite not being on the ballot herself. Healey had campaigned for candidates Joyce Craig in New Hampshire and Kamala Harris for the White House, both of whom lost. Additionally, a ballot question Healey opposed, eliminating the MCAS graduation requirement, was successful.

Healey defended her out-of-state campaigning, citing her close ties to New Hampshire. However, critics, including MassGOP Chair Amy Carnevale, questioned her strategy, particularly regarding the MCAS ballot question.

Despite these setbacks, Healey did enjoy victories in her opposition to a ballot question about raising the subminimum wage for tipped workers, as well as in some local legislative races where she endorsed Democratic candidates.

Political science professor Jerold Duquette suggested that Healey’s losses on Election Day are unlikely to substantially impact her governorship or political standing. He emphasized the importance of Healey’s support for Harris and Craig.

Healey spent Election Day in Pennsylvania campaigning for Harris, then traveled to New Hampshire to support both Harris and Craig. Wendy Wakeman, a Republican strategist, dubbed Healey as the “big loser” of the election night, highlighting her unsuccessful efforts in supporting candidates who did not win. Despite these challenges, Healey remains committed to her advocacy work beyond Massachusetts.
