FOXBOROUGH – Hunter Henry, the New England Patriots’ veteran tight end, has drawn parallels between rookie quarterback Drake Maye and his former teammate, Justin Herbert, during his final season with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020. That year, Herbert emerged as one of the NFL’s premier rookie quarterbacks, attaining the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year title, while Henry achieved personal bests with 60 receptions, 613 yards, and four touchdowns.
Reflecting on Maye’s performance, Henry noted, “There are a lot of similarities in a lot of ways. Justin’s a special player, but Drake is a very special player, too,” highlighting their comparable size and mobility—both crucial for extending plays. As Maye navigates his rookie season, he has frequently engaged in conversations with Henry about his experiences with Herbert, revealing that both quarterbacks shared initial nerves during their first starts. Maye recalled an instance when Henry told him about Herbert’s early struggles, similar to his own when he faced the Texans.
Maye, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 225 pounds, has impressed in his first six games, showcasing both an effective arm and rushing ability, amassing 260 yards on the ground. In this partnership, Henry has become a reliable target, boasting 46 receptions and 491 yards, putting him on track for one of his best seasons since his time with Herbert.
“He’s seen a lot of different looks,” Maye praised Henry. “He’s a true vet and one of the best players on our football team.” As Maye continues to develop, Henry believes in his potential, stating, “He’s really good and will continue to get better.” Their synergy could be pivotal as the Patriots aim for success this season.
