The city of Odesa in southern Ukraine is facing a severe electricity crisis after Russian attacks damaged critical energy infrastructure, leaving residents without power for two days. Emergency power outages are in place, with some facilities relying on generators for electricity. Despite the challenges, ‘invincibility’ points have been established throughout the city to provide residents with access to essential services such as heat, water, and electricity.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine has set up 45 invincibility points in Odesa and the surrounding region, ensuring that people can receive the assistance they need in times of crisis. However, some residents are struggling to cover the costs of fuel for the generators, leading to challenges for local businesses that are providing electricity to residents.
Tragically, two people were killed in the initial Russian strike on Odesa, with additional casualties reported in subsequent missile attacks. Four children were hospitalized, and significant damage was inflicted on buildings across the region. The attacks have heightened fears over Moscow’s intentions to disrupt Ukraine’s power generation capacity, particularly as the country prepares for the winter months.
