Referee Carted Off on Stretcher Following Alarming Collision in NHL Game

NHL Referee Mitch Dunning Stretchered Off After Collision During Game

In a concerning incident during the first period of the NHL game between the Colorado Avalanche and the Philadelphia Flyers, referee Mitch Dunning was stretchered off the ice following a violent collision with Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson. The incident unfolded as Dunning was skating backwards near the Flyers’ blue line when Manson, who had just come off the bench, collided with the official, apparently unaware of his presence.

Dunning remained on the ice for several minutes as he received medical attention from the Flyers’ medical team. He was subsequently placed in a neck brace and loaded onto a stretcher, prompting a brief delay in the game. Players from both teams took a knee in a show of respect as Dunning was treated.

According to the NHL, Dunning was transported to a hospital as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, all neurological signs were reported as normal, and he was able to move all his extremities, providing some comfort to concerned fans and players alike.

Mitch Dunning, who transitioned from a professional playing career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) to officiating, was elevated to full-time NHL status in 2022. Following the incident, the game continued with only one referee and two linespersons, underscoring the challenges that can emerge during a game.

The hockey community is rallying in support of Dunning, and further updates on his condition are anticipated as he recovers from the unfortunate incident. The game, while continuing, was overshadowed by concern for the well-being of the official involved.
