Bruins Goaltender Jeremy Swayman Struggles After Missing Training Camp
In a concerning start to the 2024-25 season, Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman, recently signed to an eight-year, $66 million contract, continues to battle performance issues. Swayman missed all of training camp due to prolonged contract negotiations, and expectations of rust have regrettably materialized into troubling statistics.
Swayman took to the ice only two days post-signing for the Bruins’ season opener against the Florida Panthers, after training at Boston University during the contract stalemate. Unfortunately for the Bruins, who have now suffered three consecutive losses—including a disheartening defeat against a rebuilding Columbus Blue Jackets team—Swayman’s performance has not matched the urgency of the situation. He allowed five goals on 29 shots in the recent loss, leaving him with a record of 5-7-2 and an .884 save percentage.
Head coach Jim Montgomery acknowledged the impactful absence of training camp, reflecting on the challenges Swayman faces in regaining his competitive rhythm. "I don’t think missing training camp helps anyone," Montgomery commented. "It’s tough to get the rhythm and the expectation."
Despite his struggles, Swayman expressed confidence in his ability to overcome the challenges. He emphasized that while he feels the weight of expectation, he prefers to focus on maintaining his personal standards. “I think the biggest thing that I lost out on was this group,” Swayman stated, vowing to improve and contribute effectively moving forward.
As the Bruins navigate an underwhelming 8-9-3 start, Swayman’s resurgence could be vital for the team’s success, especially with scoring issues compounding their struggles on the ice. The pressure is on for him to step up and reclaim his form to support a team facing early-season adversity.
