An Illinois woman, Alexandra Szustakiewicz, was charged with hate crimes after attacking a man wearing a sweatshirt with the word “Palestine” written on it at a Panera Bread in Downers Grove. She confronted the man and tried to hit a woman recording the encounter. Szustakiewicz was charged with two counts of hate crime and disorderly conduct. She has been ordered to have no contact with the victims and stay away from the Panera Bread location. The incident was captured on video and shared on social media, garnering millions of views.
The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Chicago) condemned the incident, describing Szustakiewicz’s behavior as “shameful and abusive.” The organization noted that the man, identified as Waseem, shielded his pregnant wife from the woman’s attacks. CAIR-Chicago stated that incidents like this reflect a broader pattern of hostility and intolerance towards Palestinian Americans and Muslim communities.
Hate crimes and Islamophobia have been on the rise, with CAIR documenting nearly 5,000 complaints between January and June 2024, a significant increase from the previous year. This surge in hate incidents has been attributed to escalating violence in Gaza, sparking fear among Muslim-American and Arab-American communities. This incident is just one of many recent cases of hate crimes targeting individuals based on their national origin or religious beliefs across the United States.
