A recent Boston Globe report has shed new light on the case of Sandra Birchmore, a young woman who was found dead in her apartment in 2021. The report details disturbing allegations of inappropriate sexual relations between Birchmore and three former Stoughton police officers, leading to a wrongful death lawsuit against the officers and the town of Stoughton. The Globe article also reveals new graphic details of the officers’ alleged misconduct, including accusations of statutory rape and encouraging Birchmore to engage in sexual acts with others.
Following the release of an internal affairs report, Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara condemned the former officers for their deceit and recommended revoking their police certifications. The Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission is also seeking to decertify the officers. The Attorney General’s office has taken over the investigation, amidst criticism of the Norfolk District Attorney’s handling of the case.
Supporters of Birchmore have organized protests and letter-writing campaigns to demand justice for her and to call for a full investigation into her death. Melissa Berry, who runs the Justice for Sandra Birchmore Facebook page, believes there are still unanswered questions surrounding Birchmore’s death. Monthly standouts are being held to keep Birchmore’s case in the public eye, with the next one scheduled for March 23 at Stoughton Town Hall.
