Mayo Denies Reports of External Consultation on Maye’s Development
In a strong rebuttal during his Monday morning interview on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show,” New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo denied allegations that ownership is seeking external guidance on quarterback Drake Maye’s development. This response comes after a report by Albert Breer from NBC Sports Boston implied that team owners Robert and Jonathan Kraft were questioning the current coaching strategies employed for the young quarterback.
Mayo emphasized that the team believes Maye is progressing well, stating, “We sit here and say that he’s developing at a good trajectory.” He dismissed the reports as “false,” expressing frustration over the mixed messages being conveyed about Maye’s growth. The implications of the Krafts questioning the effectiveness of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and his coaching staff led Mayo to assert his responsibility in protecting his team’s coaches and players from what he viewed as misinformation.
Despite the team’s struggling record of 3-8 in Mayo’s inaugural season as head coach, he maintains a solid relationship with Patriots ownership, insisting that the reports do not reflect the reality of their communication. Mayo stated, “I have a good relationship with ownership… this is not true.”
Further complicating matters, Mayo faced scrutiny over in-game decision-making in the recent loss to the Rams. Key coaching choices, such as opting to punt instead of attempting a 54-yard field goal and strategically using cornerback Christian Gonzalez against high-performing Rams receivers, have drawn criticism from fans and analysts alike.
As the Patriots navigate a challenging season, Mayo remains focused on Maye’s development and fostering internal support among his coaching staff amidst external pressures.
