The Massachusetts Association for Professional Law Enforcement (MAPLE) is calling for a state review of Mass State Police, citing a “crisis of confidence” following a series of scandals. The organization is proposing a “Blue Ribbon” commission to investigate the agency after troopers were charged with bribery and overtime abuse. Despite submitting a similar request to Gov. Charlie Baker in the past, MAPLE has resubmitted the commission proposal to Gov. Maura Healey, expressing concerns about systemic issues within the State Police. MAPLE’s president, Dennis Galvin, emphasized the need for a comprehensive review to restore public trust in the agency, similar to previous commissions in New York and Boston that addressed police corruption and brutality. Galvin recommended that the commission have the power to compel witness testimony, produce records, and conduct open hearings with appointees who have minimal ties to the political establishment. He highlighted the importance of restoring public confidence in state government through a thorough and impartial review of the State Police. MAPLE is ready to assist in any way to ensure transparency and accountability in the agency’s operations. The State Police and Gov. Healey’s office have yet to respond to the request for a commission as MAPLE continues to advocate for accountability and reform within the agency.
