A Las Vegas family is condemning police after an officer shot and killed 43-year-old Brandon Durham, who called for help during a home invasion. Durham was inside his home with his 15-year-old daughter when multiple people entered through the front and back doors. When the police arrived, they saw damaged vehicles and windows, as well as heard screaming and banging from inside the house. Officer Alexander Bookman shot and killed Durham after encountering him and a woman struggling over a knife. The woman, Alejandra Boudreaux, was taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses. The police department stated that the incident is under review by their Critical Incident Review Team.
Durham, a realtor, was described as an excellent father by his ex-wife and mother of his daughter, Ailin Averhoff. His family has started a GoFundMe to cover memorial expenses and provide emotional support. Durham leaves behind his partner, daughter, and stepson.
The police department defended the officers’ actions, stating they believed there was danger and violence occurring during the home invasion. They acknowledged Durham’s death as tragic and are taking the incident seriously. The department also mentioned that there was no gun found at the scene, but the initial call reported multiple suspects shooting into the home.
Durham’s family expressed disgust with the police department’s handling of the situation, with his daughter stating she is now fatherless. The case has sparked outrage in the community and has raised questions about police response to the incident.
