Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Maura Healey has declared that her state police will not cooperate with the mass deportation effort promised by the incoming Trump administration. The President-elect has pledged to carry out the “largest domestic deportation operation in American history” to remove millions of illegal immigrants.
During an interview on MSNBC, Healey firmly stated that the Massachusetts State Police will not assist the federal government in the deportation of illegal immigrants, noting that she will use “every tool in the toolbox” to protect residents in the state. She has a history of resistance to the Trump administration, having launched lawsuits against them when she served as the state’s attorney general.
Healey emphasized the importance of states and state officials resisting pressure from the federal government, suggesting that litigation, regulation, executive authority, and legislation could all be used to protect residents and uphold democracy. Massachusetts has been dealing with a migrant surge from the southern border, prompting Healey to declare a state of emergency and call for federal action.
In response to the situation, she has advocated for work authorizations, job training, and rehousing assistance for migrants. The state has assisted thousands of migrants in applying for work authorization and enrolling in English classes. Healey has urged federal authorities to address immigration laws, remove barriers to work permits, and provide financial assistance to states dealing with the influx of migrants.
