Four Arrested in California Insurance Fraud Scheme Dubbed “Operation Bear Claw”
Los Angeles, CA — In a bizarre twist to insurance fraud, four residents of Los Angeles were arrested Wednesday as part of “Operation Bear Claw,” accused of defrauding three insurance companies by claiming a bear caused extensive damage to their luxury vehicles, amounting to nearly $142,000.
Investigators allege that the accused submitted video evidence from the San Bernardino Mountains in January, showing what appeared to be a bear inside a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The footage, however, raised suspicions among insurance adjusters, who noted details that suggested the “bear” was, in fact, a person in a costume.
Further scrutiny revealed two additional claims filed by the group, all sharing the same date, location, and a similar narrative—a clear red flag for the claims department. A biologist from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife reviewed the purported evidence and confirmed that it was “clearly a human in a bear suit,” validating the investigation team’s suspicions.
Following the investigation, detectives executed a search warrant at the suspects’ home, where they uncovered the actual bear costume used to fabricate the claims. The identities of the four individuals and whether they have legal representation remain undisclosed.
This incident highlights a growing trend of innovative fraudulent schemes in the insurance industry, prompting calls for heightened vigilance among insurers to prevent similar fraud cases. As California continues to face a unique set of challenges with wildlife interactions, this incident underscores the need for continuous oversight in insurance claims related to animal damages.
