Human Rights Watch accuses Israel of war crimes in the Gaza Strip: Middle East’s latest update

Human Rights Watch released a report accusing Israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip, including ethnic cleansing through forced displacements and deliberate demolition of homes and civilian infrastructure. The report highlighted the killing of civilians during evacuations and in humanitarian zones designated by Israel. It also mentioned the extensive damage caused by the Israeli offensive in Gaza, leading to mass displacement of Palestinians and a looming famine.

The Israeli military did not immediately respond to the report, which also detailed the high number of Palestinian casualties, mainly women and children. The report called on governments to stop supplying weapons to Israel and comply with the International Court of Justice’s opinion that Israel’s presence in Palestinian territories is unlawful.

Meanwhile, the conflict between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah has escalated, with Israeli airstrikes intensifying in multiple areas, resulting in casualties and destruction. The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, has continued to monitor the conflict despite Israeli calls for a pullback.

In Syria, Israel carried out airstrikes in Damascus and one of its suburbs, targeting buildings and causing casualties. The strikes were part of a broader campaign against Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iranian-backed groups. The Biden administration warned Israel to increase aid to Gaza to prevent a famine, but later ruled out reducing military support despite falling short of aid demands.
