School Committee Member from Massachusetts Steps Down Following Anti-Trump Social Media Post

Sarah Murray, a member of the Millbury School Committee in Massachusetts, has resigned after making derogatory comments about Trump supporters on social media. In a post following the 2024 presidential election, Murray expressed disdain for Donald Trump and his supporters, saying she hoped they would choke on a “piece of (expletive) covered in broken glass.”

The committee confirmed that Murray’s resignation was accepted, stating that her personal posts do not reflect the opinions of the committee or the school district. The town of Millbury slightly favored Trump over Kamala Harris in the election.

Murray’s comments were brought to light by a far-right TikTok account, leading to backlash and the decision to make the school’s social media account private. Murray, who had been on the committee since 2023, did not provide a reason for her resignation in a brief notice to committee leaders.

Despite the controversy, committee member Jessica Berry Bristol thanked Murray for her service in a Facebook group. Murray, a long-time Millbury resident and parent of two children in the school district, had previously expressed excitement about serving on the committee due to her professional and parental perspective.

The committee emphasized its commitment to representing all stakeholders in the community and maintaining a high standard of leadership. The incident serves as a reminder of the impact of social media posts on public officials and the consequences of expressing controversial opinions online.
