Monomoy Field Hockey Advances to State Finals with 3-0 Victory Over Sutton

BRIDGEWATER – The Monomoy field hockey team secured its place in the Div. 4 state finals after a determined 3-0 victory against previously unbeaten No. 3 Sutton on Tuesday night. This win marks a historic achievement for the Sharks (20-0-2), as they become the first Monomoy program to reach consecutive state finals in any sport.

Senior midfielder Emily Layton dominated the match, scoring two of the three goals, providing a crucial performance for the Sharks. Layton opened the scoring with a flick that found the net late in the first quarter. Following Sam Clarke’s goal during a corner situation in the third quarter, Layton sealed the win with a stunning reverse chip early in the fourth, ensuring that Monomoy held a comfortable lead.

Goalkeeper Maddie Swett played a pivotal role, making eight saves and showcasing her prowess against Sutton’s offensive pressure. The Sharks’ ability to adapt their gameplay, especially after a subdued first half where they managed only two shots, was critical to their success. “We focused a lot on our defense,” Layton noted, highlighting their strategic shift that helped maintain their unbeaten streak.

Head coach Kyle Cappallo expressed pride in the team’s journey, stating, “Once you get to the state final, you want to get back there. We’re more prepared at this point for this state final than we were last year.”

Monomoy will face No. 1 Uxbridge in a highly anticipated rematch on Saturday at Worcester State, aiming for their first state title. With optimism and momentum on their side, the Sharks are ready to make history.
