Larry Lee Savage Jr., a former Republican candidate for the 5th Congressional District, turned himself in after being charged with stealing ballots during a public test of voting machines in Madison County, Indiana. The test was attended by representatives from political parties, candidates, media, and the public to ensure the accuracy of the voting machines before elections.
During the test, two ballots went missing, and surveillance footage showed Savage folding them and putting them in his pocket. He later approached another attendee and made a concerning remark about the ballot count. The missing ballots were found in his car, and he claimed he thought they were not real ballots.
Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Savage on charges of destroying or misplacing a ballot and theft. The voting machines’ manufacturer described the incident as sabotage of the public test and their equipment. Savage, who ran in the Republican primary against Rep. Victoria Spartz, has not yet had an initial court appearance scheduled, and he does not have a defense attorney listed.
The state GOP spokesperson condemned Savage’s actions, stating they unequivocally condemn any form of criminal election interference. Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the situation, and the process will unfold as the case progresses.
