During a meeting with the Westfield Historical Commission on Monday, Linda Saltus, a board member of the Athenaeum, expressed the organization’s willingness to preserve and display items from the Atwater mansion. The mansion is set to be torn down to make way for a new police station, and the Historical Commission has taken the first steps in identifying historical items to be saved in the 6 Union St. house.
The mansion, also known as the former Blessed Sacrament rectory, holds significant historical value in the Westfield community. In an effort to ensure that important artifacts and pieces of history are not lost during the demolition process, the Commission has requested a Certificate of Historical Review, and will be hosting a public hearing on September 23.
