Massachusetts residents have started casting their ballots in the 2024 general election, which features key races for the White House, U.S. House and Senate, and the state Legislature, as well as five ballot questions that could impact public policy in the Commonwealth. While early voting has ended, in-person voting will take place on November 5th.
Top battleground races include Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris facing Republican former President Donald Trump for the White House and Democratic incumbent U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren seeking a third term against Republican John Deaton. All nine members of Massachusetts’ U.S. House delegation are also running for reelection, with two facing Republican challengers.
In addition to the federal races, there are 54 contested House races and 14 contested Senate races at the state level. Democrats currently control both chambers and are expected to maintain their majority. Massachusetts voters are also deciding on five ballot questions on topics ranging from auditing the state Legislature to regulating access to psychedelic substances.
On the local level, the Governor’s Council, an elected body that confirms judicial nominations and gubernatorial appointments, has only three contested races out of eight seats. Several incumbent councilors are running unopposed.
Overall, the 2024 general election in Massachusetts is crucial for determining the direction of both federal and state policy for years to come. The results will be updated on Election Day as they become available and are unofficial until certified.
