Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a top surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris, responded to the fallout from President Joe Biden’s comment referring to some people as “garbage.” The comment came after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a derogatory remark about Puerto Rico at a rally for Donald Trump, which Biden seemed to reference during a zoom call. The White House clarified that Biden was criticizing the rhetoric at the rally, not all Trump supporters. Despite this, many Republicans, including Trump himself, criticized Biden for the comment.
Shapiro, while acknowledging that he would never insult Americans for supporting a different candidate, emphasized the importance of focusing on the differences between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, rather than attacking supporters of either candidate. Biden later clarified his remark on social media, emphasizing that he was referring to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico from Trump supporters at the rally. This clarification did not stop the criticism from Trump and other Republicans.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also commented on the situation, stating that everyone should be included in political discussions, regardless of who they support. The controversy surrounding Biden’s comment highlights the deep political divisions in the country and the challenges of maintaining respectful political discourse.
