Countries and the United Nations have condemned Israel after its parliament passed two laws branding the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) a “terror” group and banning the organization from operating on Israeli soil. The legislation would prevent UNRWA from providing support to Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Various global reactions followed this move.
The Palestinian presidency rejected the legislation, with Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad denouncing it as part of a Zionist aggression. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called UNRWA’s work indispensable and urged Israel to rethink its decision. China, Russia, the UK, Jordan, and several European countries also condemned the move, with the UK expressing grave concern and urging Israel to ensure aid reaches Gaza.
Australia, Belgium, Switzerland, and the World Health Organization also voiced their concerns, with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong opposing the decision and calling for compliance with international law. Belgium’s Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of UNRWA’s work for regional stability. Switzerland expressed concern over the humanitarian implications of the Israeli laws.
The WHO Director-General condemned the decision, highlighting UNRWA’s role as a lifeline for Palestinians and emphasizing the devastating consequences of banning its operations. Overall, the global community has criticized Israel’s move as a violation of international law and a threat to the well-being of millions of Palestinians who depend on UNRWA’s support.
