Over 1 million ballots were cast in the Bay State with nearly a quarter of voters taking advantage of early voting.

More than one million Massachusetts residents have already participated in the 2024 election, with 23.5% of registered voters casting their ballots. Secretary of State Bill Galvin’s office provided a breakdown of the numbers, including over 1.1 million votes being cast through mail-in ballots and early voting. There have been 1,384,983 vote by mail applications received, with 859,539 ballots returned and 327,923 early ballots cast.

Early voting will continue until Friday, and mail-in ballots can be counted if postmarked by Election Day and received by November 8. Overseas voters have until the 15th to mail their ballots. Due to concerns about mail delays, voters are encouraged to use polling places if they still have their mail-in ballots after Tuesday.

Galvin’s office emphasized that voters should only cast one ballot and that any mail-in ballots returned by those who vote in person will be rejected. City and town clerks can begin tabulating ballots as of Sunday, but official counts will not be available until polls close on November 5. Massachusetts state law does not mandate reporting unofficial election night results.

With a week left until the election, Massachusetts residents are strongly encouraged to make their voices heard through voting, whether by mail or in person. The high early voter turnout reflects the active engagement of the state’s electorate in shaping the future through the democratic process.
