New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye was placed in the NFL’s concussion protocol following a hit to the head from Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood during Sunday’s game. Maye initially stayed in the game but was eventually evaluated in the team’s medical tent and locker room.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo explained that the league requested further evaluation of Maye, who wanted to return to the game but did not pass the required tests. Mayo did not see any warning signs immediately after the hit and was surprised when Maye had to be taken to the medical tent.
Maye did not return to the game after halftime and his status for the next game is uncertain. He must follow the NFL’s return-to-participation protocol, which includes progressing through phases of limited activity, aerobic exercise, football-specific exercise, club-based non-contact training, and full football activity.
If Maye is unable to clear the concussion protocol by Sunday, Jacoby Brissett will start for the Patriots against the Titans. Mayo emphasized the importance of following the protocol for player safety and ensuring that Maye is fully recovered before returning to the field.
This incident highlights the NFL’s commitment to player safety and the thorough process that is in place to protect players’ health and well-being following head injuries.
