The Springfield Thunderbirds were unable to defeat the Providence Bruins, falling 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Bruins took the lead in the first period with goals from Jordan Oesterle and Vinni Lettieri, extending their lead to 2-0 heading into intermission. Despite a strong showing from the Thunderbirds in the second and third periods, Providence’s goaltender Michael DiPietro shut down their offensive attempts. Marcus Sylvegard had a breakaway chance in the third period, but DiPietro made a crucial save. The Thunderbirds penalty kill was flawless, but they couldn’t find a way to beat DiPietro, who made 31 saves. Patrick Brown scored an empty-netter in the final minutes to secure the win for the Bruins.
The loss puts the Thunderbirds at a record of 2-3-0-0, while the Bruins improve to 2-2-0-0. Despite a strong performance from goaltender Colten Ellis, the Thunderbirds struggled to generate offense throughout the game. The team will return home to face the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Thunderdome. The Thunderbirds will look to bounce back from this loss and secure a victory in their upcoming game.
