Joker: Folie à Deux, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 hit film Joker, has found itself struggling at the box office in its second weekend. After a disappointing opening weekend, where it grossed just $38m in the US, the film saw a steep 81% drop in ticket sales in its second weekend, earning only $7m across 4,102 theatres.
This significant decline has placed Joker: Folie à Deux among the top 20 biggest second weekend drops in box office history, with the steepest decline ever for a comic book movie. The film has grossed $165m globally so far, falling short of recouping its $200m budget.
In comparison, the original Joker was a critical and commercial success, opening to $96.2m in the US and grossing over $1bn globally. It won two Academy Awards, including best actor for Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role.
The sequel, which sees Phoenix reprising his role as the Joker and Lady Gaga joining the cast as love interest Lee Quinzel, has been criticized by reviewers as “boring” and “indulgent”. Despite some praise for Lady Gaga’s performance, critics have largely dismissed the film as lacking the excitement and depth of its predecessor.
With its lackluster box office performance and mixed reviews, it remains to be seen whether Joker: Folie à Deux will be able to overcome its early setbacks and capture the same success as the original.
