Workers at the Omni Parker House and Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport in Boston have joined the nationwide hotel strike, along with workers at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza and Hilton Boston Logan Airport. More than 5,000 hotel workers across the country, including housekeepers, front desk agents, cooks, servers, and more, are on strike at Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, and Omni hotels. The workers are demanding higher wages, fair staffing and workloads, and the reversal of COVID-era cuts.
Yuri Yep, a restaurant server at Omni Parker House, expressed that he works two jobs to provide for his family and is missing out on time with his kids due to the demanding workload. The union, UNITE HERE Local 26, is supporting the strikers and encouraging citywide support for a fair contract.
After months of negotiations, over 10,000 hotel workers went on limited duration strikes on Labor Day weekend. The union is urging travelers to avoid staying or dining at struck hotels. Picket lines will be present outside the hotels, with reduced services and disruptions for guests. The workers are calling for changes that address their financial struggles while the hotel companies continue to make record profits.
UNITE HERE is committed to continuing strikes until the hotel corporations agree to contracts that meet the needs of the workers in terms of wages, staffing, and workloads. Hotel workers are standing together in this fight for fair treatment and are prepared for a long battle to achieve their goals.
