Law enforcement officers may have prevented a third assassination attempt against former US President Donald Trump after a man was arrested with unregistered firearms near a California campaign rally. The suspect, identified as Vem Miller, was found with loaded firearms, fake documents, and an unregistered vehicle. Miller, who claims to be a Trump supporter, denies intending to harm the former president and said the accusations are false.
Miller faces gun charges but was released on bail and is set to appear in court in January 2025. The incident comes after a previous attempt in September when a man was charged with trying to assassinate Trump at his Florida golf course. In that case, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The US Secret Service stated that Trump was not in danger during the recent incident and that protective operations were not impacted. The agency also mentioned that the investigation is ongoing, hinting that federal arrests may follow. The incident adds to concerns about security protocols at Trump’s events, following a shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania earlier this year.
Trump’s campaign has not commented on the recent arrest. The Secret Service previously admitted failures in security planning during the Pennsylvania rally, raising questions about the safety measures in place for such events. The ongoing investigations and charges highlight the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety of high-profile public figures like former President Donald Trump.
