Local animal shelter in Massachusetts in need of assistance following the sudden surrender of 23 dogs

A Massachusetts animal shelter received 23 small dogs from an overwhelmed owner on Thursday. The dogs, a mix of Maltese, poodle, Yorkie, and shih tzu breeds, are all under 4 years old and weigh 10 pounds or less. Second Chance Animal Services in East Brookfield is providing them with necessary treatment, including spay/neuter surgeries, flea treatment, vaccines, and testing, at an estimated cost of $15,000. The shelter is asking for donations to help cover these expenses.

Sheryl Blancato, CEO of Second Chance Animal Services, explained that the owner started with a couple of dogs, which quickly multiplied, leading to the overwhelming situation. Previously, the shelter received 98 black cats from one house, marking their largest surrender.

The dogs will be available for adoption next week, and information will be posted on the shelter’s website. Second Chance Animal Services worked closely with the local animal control officer to manage the transfer of the dogs. The shelter is determined to find loving homes for these dogs and is seeking support from the community in achieving this goal.

Individuals interested in providing a forever home for one of these small dogs are encouraged to visit the shelter’s website for further information. The story serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need for community support in caring for animals in need.
