In a near-unanimous vote, Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever has been named the WNBA Rookie of the Year, receiving 66 of 67 votes from a national panel of sportswriters and sportscasters. The No. 1 overall pick from Iowa averaged 19.2 points and a league-best 8.4 assists per game, leading the Fever to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Despite not being chosen for the U.S. Olympic team, Clark showed her impressive skills in the weeks following the Olympic break, averaging 24.7 points and 9.3 assists in her first 10 games after the break. She set multiple rookie records, including the first two triple-doubles by a rookie in WNBA history.
Additionally, Clark’s impact was not only felt on the court but also off it. She, along with other rookies, boosted ratings and attendance for the WNBA, with the Fever leading the league in attendance both at home and on the road. Indiana’s playoff game against Connecticut drew 1.8 million viewers, making it the most-watched playoff game on ESPN despite competition from the NFL.
Clark’s remarkable season and contributions to the Fever have solidified her as a rising star in the WNBA, and fans can expect more exciting performances from her in the future.
