Massachusetts is offering 14 acres of land in Agawam, as well as parcels in Middleborough and Lakeville, for farming. The state is seeking proposals from new farmers looking to start small and diversified operations. The land will be leased for five years, with the possibility of a five-year renewal. The parcels are historically agricultural and come with cover crops already in place. Temporary structures like tunnels and fences are allowed, with livestock permitted for rotational grazing. However, cannabis and compost-exclusive operations are not allowed.
Interested farmers can attend a virtual information session on Oct. 10 at 12 p.m. and tours of the properties will be conducted later on. Proposals must be submitted by Nov. 22 to the Department of Agricultural Resources. For more information, visit mass.gov/farmlandlicensing or contact Ryan Burke at ryan.p.burke@mass.gov.
This opportunity presents a chance for aspiring farmers to get their hands dirty and make things grow on state-owned land in Massachusetts. Whether you’re looking to start a new farming venture or expand an existing operation, this program offers a unique opportunity to access agricultural land and resources with the support of the state.
