Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris visited the U.S.-Mexico border and promised tougher asylum restrictions and more efforts to reduce illegal border crossings if elected president. Harris plans to make it harder to lift an emergency order put in place by President Joe Biden that authorizes the U.S. to turn away migrants entering the country illegally when the border is overwhelmed. Despite this, Harris also supports a “pathway to citizenship” for undocumented migrants currently in the United States. She rejected the false choice between securing the border and creating a safe and orderly immigration system. Former President Donald Trump criticized Harris for the Biden administration’s immigration policies and accused her of leading the worst border crisis in history. Harris, during her visit to the border, met with Border Patrol officials to discuss disrupting the flow of fentanyl through the border, and was introduced by a mother who lost her son to fentanyl. Harris emphasized Trump’s role in blocking a bipartisan border bill and stated that Americans deserve a president who cares more about border security than playing political games. The visit marked Harris’ second trip to the southern border as vice president and her first as the Democratic presidential nominee. Despite trailing Trump in Arizona, Harris expressed a commitment to securing the border and providing support to Border Patrol agents in carrying out their duties.
