Former President Donald Trump has stated that if he wins the 2024 presidential election, he plans to ask the Justice Department to prosecute Google for what he alleges is an illegal system that only reveals negative stories about him while promoting positive stories about his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump posted on Truth Social, claiming that Google’s actions are interfering with elections and should be criminally prosecuted. However, a Google spokesperson has denied favoring any candidate in search results and pointed out limitations in a study conducted by the conservative group Media Research Center that allegedly found bias in Google’s search rankings.
This is not the first time Trump has expressed a desire to use federal power against his perceived enemies, as he has previously threatened to imprison Biden, Harris, Pelosi, and others. During his presidency, Trump reportedly attempted to pressure officials to prosecute Hillary Clinton and James Comey, but his efforts were resisted. Additionally, Trump’s personal loyalty to his agenda has been highlighted as a priority when choosing appointees for his next administration if he were to be reelected.
In response to the threats and allegations made by Trump, it is important to note that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that presidents are immune from criminal prosecution for conduct involving discussions with Justice Department officials. Trump is currently facing federal criminal charges related to election interference, to which he has pleaded not guilty. The case is still ongoing, with Trump contesting whether a trial can proceed given the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity.
