Chief John F. Carmichael Jr. of the Newton police department has resigned from his position after a 35-year career in public service. Carmichael took a special leave of absence in May to focus on his health and made the decision to step down to prioritize his well-being, family, and other opportunities.
Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced Carmichael’s resignation, effective immediately, and expressed her respect and gratitude for his positive impact on the police department. During his tenure, Carmichael focused on implementing 21st Century Policing principles and community engagement programs in Newton.
Acting Chief George McMains has been filling in during Carmichael’s absence and the process of filling the Chief of Police position has begun in accordance with Newton’s Special Legislation. Carmichael, along with the city of Newton and the Boston Athletic Association, faced a federal lawsuit regarding an incident at the 2023 Boston Marathon where spectators, mostly people of color, were believed to have been racially profiled by Newton police.
Despite the lawsuit, Carmichael defended the department’s response and the actions of the officers involved. Moving forward, the Newton police department will continue its commitment to serving the community and upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and professionalism under new leadership.
